The WPHF stands as a global partnership that channels funding to grassroots women’s organizations operating in conflict zones. Through this vital support, these women’s voices gain strength and are effectively integrated into peace processes and humanitarian response efforts. In the Afghan context, the WPHF’s role is particularly significant. It bolsters the capacity of local women’s groups and ensures that aid initiatives genuinely address the needs of women. To further enhance the impact of our WPHF initiatives, UN Women Afghanistan is seeking a full-time consultant. In the role of UN Women Afghanistan Consultant – WPHF Portfolio, you will provide essential technical, organizational, and administrative support. Reporting to the GIHA Programme Manager, your daily tasks will involve close collaboration with the WPHF team, our partner organizations, and other key stakeholders. Ultimately, you will play a significant part in ensuring the effective implementation of WPHF-funded projects and their tangible impact on the lives of women. This home-based position will require regular travel to Kabul for in-person meetings.

Your Key Responsibilities as Our Consultant

Project Planning and Development

Initially, you will contribute to the design of projects funded by the WPHF. Ensuring their alignment with UN Women’s humanitarian strategies and WPHF guidelines will be a fundamental aspect of this UN Women Afghanistan Consultant role. Furthermore, you will assist in identifying streamlined approaches to strengthen the capacity of women’s organizations in their aid work. This will involve the creation of clear and concise documentation and proposals. Additionally, you will help develop user-friendly tools for our partners to effectively plan, implement, and monitor their projects.

Project Implementation and Coordination

Subsequently, you will help in the preparation and tracking of work plans and budgets. Following this, you will support the day-to-day management of projects and provide assistance to our partner organizations. Moreover, you will contribute to the development of reports for donors and internal documentation, analyzing project achievements and challenges encountered. Finally, you will liaise with the UN operations team to ensure the timely acquisition of necessary resources for WPHF projects.

Support and Capacity Building for Women’s Groups

Crucially, you will maintain regular communication with WPHF-supported organizations. Providing them with technical guidance and helping them resolve any challenges they face will be a key part of your responsibilities as a UN Women Afghanistan Consultant. Moreover, you will facilitate their learning and development by organizing training sessions and sharing relevant information. You will also assist them in adopting simple methods for tracking their progress and evaluating their success.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

In terms of oversight, you will monitor the performance of WPHF-supported groups by reviewing their reports. Following this, you will help coordinate field visits to project sites and contribute to the preparation of mission reports. Lastly, you will assist in the preparation of quarterly and donor reports, ensuring that these documents clearly articulate the expected outcomes and the actual impact of the projects on women’s lives.

Knowledge Sharing and Communication

To promote learning and best practices, you will help document key lessons learned and effective strategies from WPHF projects. Besides this, you will support events aimed at raising awareness about the WPHF. Finally, you will assist in the creation of accessible materials that effectively demonstrate the tangible difference made by WPHF funding.

Additional Responsibilities

Beyond these core tasks, you will also undertake other relevant duties as required. This will ensure the efficient and effective delivery of WPHF and broader UN Women humanitarian efforts by the UN Women Afghanistan Consultant.

Location and Travel Requirements for the UN Women Afghanistan Consultant

While this position is home-based, it will necessitate regular travel to Afghanistan (Kabul) for meetings and consultations. The working hours will align with those in Afghanistan (Sunday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Kabul time).

Minimum Requirements for Application:

  • Education: A Master’s degree in social sciences, human rights, gender studies, international development, or a related field is required. However, a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field combined with an additional two years of relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree. Project management certification is an asset.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible professional experience in project planning, coordination, monitoring, donor reporting, and capacity building is essential. Prior experience in humanitarian settings and familiarity with the workings of aid organizations are highly desirable. Experience working on projects focused on women in humanitarian contexts and with women’s organizations is a significant advantage. Furthermore, experience working with government entities or donor agencies is considered a plus.
  • Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory. Knowledge of Dari or Pashtu is advantageous.
